America's Best Suburbs

Alexandria, Virginia

Alexandria, Virginia, is a suburb of Washington, DC, eight miles south of the Capital on the opposite bank of the Potomac River. Many of Alexandria’s approximately 160,000 residents are understandably connected to the U.S. Government. They work in the Federal Civil Service, or the U.S. Military, or for one of the many private companies that do business with the government and armed forces. The Department of Defense is said to be Alexandria’s largest employer. Another is the Institute for Defense Analysis. And in 2017 the National Science Foundation moved its headquarters to Alexandria.

This successful small city holds many business opportunities for an EB-5 investor relocating to America. Once settled in, that investor will find a compatible environment for networking. And almost any resident will say that Alexandria has an exceptionally appealing quality of life.

One of the most attractive Alexandria neighborhoods is Old Town, which is laid out along the Potomac River and has origins dating back to 1749. Its inviting features include historic houses, art galleries, antique shops, good restaurants, and excellent schools:

  • The Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy in Old Town is a public school that serves kindergarten through grade-five and is one of only four certified Core Knowledge Schools in the state of Virginia.
  • Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology is a magnet school that has placed first in Newsweek’s annual America’s Top High Schoolsrankings for three consecutive years.
  • As to colleges, Georgetown University, a short water taxi ride up the Potomac, is one of the most highly regarded universities in America. The University of Virginia in Charlottesville is also among the country’s top colleges, a state school with tuition of $16,000 for Virginia residents.

There is no shortage of cultural and entertainment options for Alexandrians, not with the museums and theaters and sports teams of the Nation’s Capital right upstream. Visitors from the world over come to experience what is right at hand for the fortunate town. What could be more world-class than a performance at the Kennedy Center? Or dressing up in black-tie for an Inaugural Ball?

Alexandria was named a Top 5 Best Small City in the U.S. 2018 by the Conde Nast Readers’ Choice Awards, and one of the South’s Prettiest Cities 2018 by Southern Living.

The median price of homes currently listed in Alexandria, according to Zillow, is $795,000, though houses in the Old Town neighborhood are likely to be more. Home values in Alexandria overall have gone up 2.9% in 2018 and Zillow predicts they will rise 2.1% in 2019.

For EB-5 investors to whom the Washington, DC area is under consideration for a future home, Alexandria, Virginia is a unique community that is ultra-convenient to the Capital. It’s an area that The LCP Group knows well – we have successful EB-5 projects in downtown Washington and in Fairfax County, adjacent to Alexandria. We would be pleased to share our knowledge of the area – its commercial, educational, and lifestyle features – and work with potential residents from overseas in getting them here.
